First Green Day on the books: St. Patrick's Day of course!
Here at the Boswell House we celebrated this fun holiday the same way we do with lots of holidays (... actually I think ALL holidays ... maybe not flag day but I can fix that - I'm losing track - back to the point)
The St. Patrick's menu was a classic dish, corned beef and cabbage.
Made with cabbage (of course) le beef (duh) and some awesome purple potatoes and carrots (well, orange carrots but that's clear in the photo) Ohhhh yeah. No wait, it gets better!
We added an entire onion, topped of the whole thing with brown sugar and added an entire bottle of Guinness. It's okay to be really, really jealous right now. We completely understand, we had the wonderful experience of eating it and I'm not going to lie - you missed out!
Everything slow cooked for about 7 hours and the house smelled amazing. We got pretty hungry waiting so we tided our appetites with a festive cheese!
Blarney Castle on St. Patty's day! It is not possible to get better than that ... oh no wait it is ... because then we got to teat this!
With enough leftover to have lunches for 2 different days! Now you may very well be GREEN with envy (see, this theme, it carries!)
What's another Green Day after St. Patrick's Day has come and gone? The first day of Spring! When all the world is turning green again, and a young girls fancy turns to planting all the things.
We started March 18th by seeding and fertilizing the lawn (a wee bit early, Spring didn't officially start until the 20th but in Tucson if its warm it happens much sooner than everywhere else)
I was so proud of us for knocking out this project even after the sun went down. GO TEAM!
While Dylan was lovingly planting little seeds on the lawn half of the back yard in hopes that many green things would sprout, I went to the gravel half of the back yard and tried to kill everything that was altready growing. Odd juxtaposition, but what can you do?
The rest of the week wasn't incredibly green but I'm positive we recycled a few things along the way so it still counts. Anyway, that brings us to today. We hit up the home improvement store for all things plant and went to town on the front yard.
How was today a Green Day? It was St. Plantings Day! =D
Look at all of the glorious, beautiful petunias!
We got one flat of every color at the store and just went nuts around the pepper tree. I really hope they take off it's going to be so pretty!
We got new plants for the pots by the front door. This guy is labeled as a "shade" plant, so we're hoping it won't die. It's gardenias, so wish us luck! Dylan said if it takes hold and starts to bloom that its going to smell fantastic, I'm looking forward to that.
Over in the other pot, we had one odd, lonely looking cactus, so we got him some friends
Then we put in 2 flats of marigolds, right by the front door not only to be pretty but we heard that these little fellas repel mosquitoes!
Now that's everything we planted today. We have a lot of life coming from the plants that we already have! Check out this gorgeous dark pink rose
Okay, so sure it's a little in the way - but we just don't have the heart to cut it back yet.
The orange tree on the other side of the rose bushes is also in full bloom and it smells magical.
Today's Green-ing didn't end with planting, we also pulled out lots of little green uninvited pals from our front yard. See here?
All that little green bushy stuff on the bottom half of the picture? Yeah, all of that was up on the hill too - so we pulled it out. Why we stopped with the hill ... I'm not sure. We'll battle the rest of those weeds another day. I'm still proud of this feat!
Now I know on this blog we always see photos of what was done, and we always see photos of Dylan doing the work. This is because I'm the photographer, not because I don't work hard too! So today I took a photo of the damage I did planting. See, this is a lesson I learn every spring -
"Oh yeah, that's why I wear my gloves no matter how awkward it is trying to plant things with butter fingers"
Heh.
Alright so we have the yard all set, the watering system is set up and ready to go, the plants are in place and the sun is shining. How will the humans be prepared?
Bring it on Spring and Summer! I'm happy to see you again!!
